Saraswati Singh launches campaign to run for Hennepin County Attorney
(Hennepin County-Minn) – Saraswati Singh, an
experienced and progressive prosecutor nationally recognized for her leadership, announced that she will launch her campaign for the office of Hennepin County Attorney on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.
“This is a historic moment, and we need someone who meets this moment,” Singh said. “We need a community-focused Hennepin County Attorney’s Office that understands our role in public safety, our duty to enforce police accountability, and our responsibility toward racial equity.”
Ms. Singh is an Assistant County Attorney for the Ramsey County Attorney's Office, serving alongside John J. Choi and prosecuting sexual assault, murder, and other felony cases. Ms. Singh previously worked at the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office as Assistant Attorney General in the Public Safety Division. Prior to this, she clerked for Judge Jay M. Quam in Hennepin County District Court, managed a civil rights case load for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis, and assisted the U.S. Senate Judiciary staff in Justice Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings.
Ms. Singh, who is a Democrat and a daughter of immigrants, has been described as a passionate advocate for justice, equity, and rule of law, and works tirelessly to help the community. She will bring that drive to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. She served four terms as Co-President of the progressive Minnesota Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society. She was appointed by Governor Tim Walz to the Council of Asian Pacific Minnesotans, is a Diversity & Inclusion Committee Member of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association, and volunteers at the Simpson homeless shelter. Ms. Singh received the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office Public Service award.
Ms. Singh earned a B.A. in Political Science from Colgate University and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School.
She has received the
endorsement of Ramsey County Attorney John J. Choi. “I admire Saraswati's enthusiasm for improving the justice system for all people, and her recognition that it starts with listening to our community. She will prioritize her office's resources on violent crime and focus her leadership on improving the quality of justice for all of Hennepin County,” says Choi. Other public officials, including Reps. Esther Agbaje and Athena Hollins, have also endorsed Ms. Singh.
Saraswati Singh's
campaign kick-off event will be at Number 12 Cider, 614 N. 5th St, Minneapolis, on November 11 at 5:00 PM, and is open to the community and media.
